I won't waste your time with hard puzzles.

A lot of chess training is busywork. Thousands of tactics, opening files you'll never reach, "improve your calculation" with no idea what that means for you specifically.

Your games are more useful than any of that. They show where you think clearly and where you don't, which positions you understand and which ones you avoid, and when the clock starts making your decisions for you. My job is to read them properly, then turn what we find into training you can actually do.

Depending on what your games show, we work on your opening repertoire, positional understanding, calculation, endgames, or the practical side: decision-making, time management, and handling pressure. Usually some of each, in the right proportion.

The process

How we work together

  1. 01

    We look at your games

We start from your recent games: wins and losses, classical or online. This is where the real information is. Not in a questionnaire about your weaknesses.

  2. 02

    We find what keeps repeating

One bad move is noise. The same kind of mistake in four games is a pattern. Usually there are two or three of them, and they cost far more points than any opening.

  3. 03

We work out why it happens

Did you not see the idea, see it and misjudge it, or run short on time? Each one has a different fix. This is the part an engine can't do for you.

  4. 04

    We build a training plan

Calculation, openings, positional understanding and endgames, in the proportion your games actually call for. You leave with a routine, not a reading list.

  5. 05

    You do the work

Homework after every lesson, so you know what to study before the next one. Chess is like the gym: an hour a week with a coach only works if the other days aren't empty.

  6. 06

    We review and adjust

Next time we look at your new games. If the pattern is fading, we move on. If it isn't, we change the approach rather than repeating it louder.

My training approach

An engine finds the mistake. A coach finds the reason.

Most players already run their games through an engine. It's the step after that where improvement happens.

Engine analysis

23. Bxf6?  −1.4

Mistake. Best was 23. Nd5.

Example position

Tells you that a move was wrong, and what the best move was. Useful, but on its own almost impossible to learn from. You can't play like an engine, and it never tells you why you chose what you chose.

Human understanding

  • Did you see Nd5 and reject it, or never consider it?
  • Why did giving up the bishop feel natural to you?
  • Is this the third game this month where it happened?

An engine can tell you a move is inaccurate. A coach should help you understand why you made it, what pattern you missed, and how to stop it happening again.

An honest note

What I won't promise

I won't promise you a rating. Nobody honest can. It depends on the work you put in, how often you play, and a fair amount of chess being chess. What we work towards is that you understand your games better, know what to work on, and have a plan for doing it.
